Het Nationaal Geografisch Instituut heeft als hoofdopdracht om topografische kaarten van België op te stellen en te actualiseren. Niet toevallig staat het instituut onder voogdij van de minister van Defensie. Defensie is nog steeds één van de belangrijkste gebruikers van deze kaarten. Vandaag is het NGI een open modern instituut dat topografische databanken beheert en digitale geografische informatie en diensten aanbiedt aan zowel overheden, professionals als particulieren.
